Texas has proven itself as a national leader in education, with more schools than any other state and a fourth place ranking in the number of colleges. Additionally, Texas is one of only 19 states that require a passing grade on a competency test before a high school diploma is granted.
COASTAL BEND COLLEGE www.coastalbend.edu provides vocational and academic courses for certification or associate degrees. The college also works with local business and industry to customize training and education classes for employees. Examples of customized training includes the nursing program, welding and machinists programs. ALICE INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICTwww.aliceisd.net features a 4A high school with several vocational programs including Architectural Materials, Industrial Technology, Health Science Technology, Marketing, Business Computer Info Systems, VICA, DECCA, Digital Graphics/CAD, Cosmetology, Auto Tech, Law Enforcement, Home Economics, Medical Administration and Agriculture. The May 16, 2004 issue of Newsweek magazine ranked Alice High School number 555 on the list of the top 1000 high schools across the United States. Currently there are six elementary schools, two intermediate campuses, one middle school and one 4A high school. Three of six elementary campuses have been rebuilt in the last seven years. The middle school has recently been rebuilt and the new campus opened its doors in the 2009-2010 school year.
Coastal Bend Tech Prep Consortium includes all independent school districts in the region, as well as higher education institutions and many local businesses. The consortium has 23 approved Tech Prep programs with about 1,900 students enrolled.
